Auralex® Hosts Lecture Session at NAMM 2017 TEC Tracks Featuring Auralex’s Robb Wenner and Acclaimed Studio Designer Carl Tatz
Indianapolis, IN, February 1, 2017 – Auralex® Acoustics, Inc., the world’s leading brand of acoustical treatments, and celebrating its 40th anniversary, held a special lecture on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at The NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA, part of the convention’s TEC Tracks series of educational sessions. The lecture featured two speakers: Robb Wenner, Auralex Marketing Manager/Artist Relations, and acclaimed studio designer Carl Tatz, TEC Award-winning president and founder of Carl Tatz Design.
Wenner’s portion focused in part on the Auralex mantra “It’s not the gear; it’s the room” – in other words, peculiarities in a critical listening environment are too often blamed on the gear components, rather than addressing the real source of the problem: a room’s acoustical anomalies. Any room can be improved with the proper acoustical treatment, thereby optimizing gear to its fullest capabilities. Other topics of discussion included tips on constructing a space for accurate sound from the ground up, other treatment solutions, the importance of keeping sound off a room’s boundaries via proper treatment, the practice of “floating” a space’s sound producers (monitors, amps, drums, subs, mics, etc.) for more accurate performance, the proper approach to acoustical treatment in terms of how much or how little of a space to treat, and more.
Tatz, who frequently employs Auralex solutions as part of his studio design approaches, (namely the PhantomFocus MixRoom™, which pairs Tatz’s proprietary PhantomFocus™ monitor protocol with the Carl Tatz Signature Series™ family of acoustic modules by Auralex), expanded on Wenner’s points. First, he explored monitor positioning protocol relative to the primary axial modes in a control room using his Carl Tatz Design (CTD) Null Positioning Ensemble™. He also discussed first reflections from the monitors and how they can be attenuated with acoustical treatment; demonstrated a primary axial mode calculator that can be downloaded from the CTD website; shared actual project graphs that showed the typical 125Hz frequency dip in near-field setups and how it can be corrected; and answered audience questions about their personal studios. Wenner and Tatz also previewed the new Auralex Carl Tatz MixRoom Kits™, which will be introduced soon.
After the session, Wenner remarked, “I was happy to share the perspectives and expertise of Auralex with the NAMM audience. We know NAMM is full of passionate, critical listeners, and it’s important that everyone gets the most out of their gear and their spaces. Carl and I each put our own spin on these topics of interest, and I think the lecture was a resounding success.”
